French skipper Paul Meilhat on board SMA, today crossed The Transat bakerly finish line at 14:35:14 local time to finish fourth, completing the line up of IMOCA 60 competitors who successfully made it to New York.
Using The Transat bakerly as a test sail for himself and his 60ft ocean racer ahead of the Vendée Globe in November, making it to The Transat start line and finishing the race are both huge achievement for Meilhat who was left hospitalized after sustaining a fractured pelvis and rib during the Transat St Barth Port-La-Forêt in December 2015.
His first race since the incident, the skipper covered 4112nm of the Atlantic ocean in a time of 14 days, 5 hours, 5 minutes and 14 seconds, averaging a speed of 12.06 knots. He also qualifies for the Vendée Globe.
Meilhat arrives in New York 2 days, 2 hours, 36 minutes and 35s after IMOCA 60 Class winner Armel Le Cléac’h.
The IMOCA Class bakerly Exhibition race will take place on Friday 20th May on the Hudson River.
