By hosting The transat CIC, Lorient La Base is reviving its tradition of hosting major transatlantic races. The conversion of the former submarine base, supported by Lorient Agglomération, has led to the emergence of a whole ecosystem around international ocean racing. Today, this industry represents almost 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, and annual economic spin-offs are estimated at €35 million. Lorient La Base is home to 122 teams and some of the world's greatest skippers. The site is also ideal for organizing major nautical events: Volvo Ocean Race, Défi Azimut - Lorient Agglomération, 24h Ultim, Solitaire du Figaro, Tour de France à la Voile, Atlantique-Le Télégramme-Groupama, Retour à la Base... It was chosen to be the setting for the start of the Transat-CIC, won 60 years ago by local boy Eric Tabarly.
